This small wooden rat is one of Shinobu Kogeiten's Tottori zodiac figures, representing the first of the twelve zodiac animals, long associated with resourcefulness and a household that never goes without. The workshop in Tottori Prefecture has made wooden toys and folk crafts by hand since 1946 and is now run by the second generation.
Each figure is made from cedar and cypress grown in Tottori, with the animal's features simplified into a six-sided form and finished in a bright, modern hand-painted style. This is the kids size, a smaller scale within the range, and it is a decorative craft piece rather than a children's toy.
Please note: each figure is handmade and painted by hand, so colours, patterns and finish vary slightly from piece to piece and may differ from the photos. Sizes are approximate and vary with each animal's design.
Features
- Handmade from Tottori-grown cedar and cypress by a long-established folk-toy workshop
- Six-sided form reduces the rat to a clean, characterful shape
- Painted by hand, so each figure varies slightly in colour and line
- A considered birth-year gift for anyone born in the Year of the Rat, or collect all twelve as a set
Specifications
- Size: Approx. L 5 × H 3 cm (varies by animal)
- Material: Cedar, cypress
- Country of Manufacture: Japan
