Cook restaurant-quality rice at home with the Kamado-san, a handcrafted donabe rice cooker from Nagatani-en — one of Japan's most celebrated Iga-yaki pottery makers, firing kilns since 1832. The name "Kamado-san" pays homage to the traditional Japanese wood-fired stove, and this pot recreates that same gentle, enveloping heat on a modern gas burner.

The secret lies in the porous Iga clay body, which "breathes" during cooking and retains heat exceptionally well. A special far-infrared glaze penetrates to the core of each grain, while the signature double lid acts as a natural pressure cooker — preventing boil-overs and producing fluffy, glossy rice with no heat adjustment required.

Features

  • Double-lid design acts as a natural pressure cooker — no boil-overs
  • Porous Iga clay body with outstanding heat retention
  • Far-infrared glaze heats rice evenly to the core
  • Set-and-forget cooking — no heat adjustment needed
  • Also suits soups, stews and hot pot dishes (without inner lid)
  • Handcrafted by Nagatani-en, Iga-yaki potters since 1832

Specifications

  • Size: Approx. ø24 × H18 cm (3-cup size, including handles and lid)
  • Capacity: Approx. 1,500 ml

How to Cook Rice with Kamado-san

2. Set the Lids

Align the inner and outer lid holes perpendicular to each other.

3. Cook

Heat on medium-high (medium for brown rice). Turn off 1–2 minutes after steam vigorously escapes from the outer lid hole.

4. Steam

Leave covered for 20 minutes.

Iga-yaki Pottery and Its Unique Clay

  1. Rich Natural Resources
Iga-yaki developed thanks to Iga's high-quality clay and red pine forests, providing ideal materials and fuel for pottery since the Kamakura period.
  2. Why Iga Clay is Special
Iga clay, from 4-million-year-old organic-rich soil layers, forms tiny pores when fired, creating 'breathing clay.' This enhances heat retention and far-infrared effects, cooking food evenly and keeping it warm. Its durability makes it Japan's only domestic clay suitable for heat-resistant donabe, inspiring Nagatani-en's Kamado-san and other innovative cookware.
