Banko ware (Banko-yaki) comes from Yokkaichi and the neighbouring towns of Komono, Asahi and Kawagoe in Mie Prefecture. It has been a nationally designated traditional craft since 1979, and it is best known for donabe, the clay pots used for winter stews and rice. Most of this range is made by Ginpo, a Yokkaichi kiln founded in 1932 that prepares its clay, forms, glazes and fires in its own factory. Hario's glass-lid Gohangama rice cookers also use a Banko ware body. Dry a donabe fully after washing and bring it up to heat slowly.
