Shiraki Torchin USB Lantern - Circle

Torchin is a portable rechargeable lantern created through a collaboration between Shiraki Kougei and Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, reinterpreting the traditional Yame chochin as a piece you can carry from room to room, or take outside after dark. The washi paper shade, known as a hibukuro, is hand-made and hand-painted by Shiraki Kougei's craftsmen using the same bamboo-spiral technique used in their fixed lanterns.

The paper shade sits on a wooden cylindrical body with a touch-sensitive metal cap, letting you cycle through three brightness levels with a single tap. Torchin charges via USB Type-C, so there is no need for disposable batteries or a nearby power point once it is topped up.
