Kousaido

Japanese incense from a Kyoto perfumer

Kousaido (香彩堂) blends incense from a workshop on Karasuma-dori in central Kyoto, in a city where fragrance has been part of daily life for centuries.

What sets their incense apart is the base. Every blend is built on sandalwood combined with natural aromatics rather than synthetic fragrance oils — a slower, more expensive way to make incense. The result burns with noticeably little smoke odour and a soft, rounded scent that fills a room without overwhelming it.

Incense arrived in Japan alongside Buddhism, and over the centuries moved beyond the temple into ordinary life — clearing a room, marking the start of the day, settling the mind before reading or meditation. Kousaido makes incense for exactly that: not ceremony, but the quiet punctuation of an ordinary day.

Every Kousaido product at Minimaru is made in Japan and dispatched from our Melbourne store.

The range

Seven series, one house style

Kousaido organises its incense into distinct series — each with its own format, packaging and mood. Here is how to find your way around.

Start here

Hyakurakukou — the scent library

If you buy one thing from Kousaido, make it Hyakurakukou. The name means roughly "a hundred pleasures of fragrance", and the series lives up to it: twenty-three scents running from traditional Japanese woods through to coffee, yuzu and palo santo.

Each box holds 40 sticks, roughly 157 mm long, with a small aluminium holder included so nothing else is needed. A stick burns for about 25 minutes.

Because the base is sandalwood rather than a synthetic carrier, the scents read as soft and layered rather than sharp — and the smoke itself has very little smell of its own.

The Hyakurakukou scent chart

Kousaido maps its core scents across two axes — sweet to fresh, and light to heavy. It is the quickest way to narrow down a first order.

If you like something warm and enveloping, look top-right: Vanilla, Lavender, Aloeswood. If you want something crisp and clean, the lower-left corner is where Green Tea, Lemon and Camphor sit. Sandalwood and Coffee anchor the middle.

Treat it as a guide rather than a rule — scent is personal, and the boundaries are soft.

How to

Burning Japanese incense

Two Japanese incense sticks burning in a holder with smoke rising

Set the holder

Place your holder or dish on a heat-safe, non-flammable surface, away from draughts and anything that catches.

Light and wait

Light the tip, let the flame take for a few seconds, then gently blow it out. A steady ember should remain.

Let it work

A Hyakurakukou stick burns about 25 minutes; an Iyashi Neko cone 15 to 17. In a small room, half a stick is often enough.

Finish safely

Never leave burning incense unattended. Embers can stay live after the smoke stops, so check before you leave the room.

Questions

Common questions

Is Kousaido incense made in Japan?

Yes. Every Kousaido product we stock is manufactured in Japan, blended at their workshop in Kyoto. Country of origin is Japan across the entire range.

How smoky is it?

Noticeably less than most. Kousaido builds its blends on a sandalwood base with natural aromatics, which produces a softer scent throw and very little smoke odour of its own — so what you smell is the fragrance rather than the burning. It still produces visible smoke, so ventilate the room as you would with any incense.

How long does one stick burn?

A Hyakurakukou stick is about 157 mm and burns for roughly 25 minutes. Iyashi Neko cones burn 15 to 17 minutes. In a small room you can halve a stick and still scent the space.

Do I need to buy a holder separately?

Not for most of the range. Hyakurakukou includes a small aluminium holder, Latta tins have one built into the lid, and the Iyashi Neko and Usagi sets each come with a ceramic dish. A separate holder is worth it if you want something nicer on display — the celadon and milky-white long dishes catch ash better over a full stick.

Which scent should I start with?

Yuzu is our bestseller and the easiest to like — bright Japanese citrus, not at all heavy. If you prefer traditional Japanese incense, start with Sandalwood or Aloewood. For something unexpected, Coffee is genuinely convincing.

What is a fragrant sachet and how long does it last?

A 匂い袋 is a small pouch of blended aromatics — nothing is burned. Tuck it into a drawer, wardrobe or bag and it scents the space gently for several months. They are also the mildest way into Japanese fragrance if incense smoke isn't for you.

Do you ship Kousaido incense across Australia?

Yes. All Kousaido stock is held and dispatched from our Melbourne store, so delivery is domestic — no import wait and no customs. You can also see the range in person at our Clayton and Chadstone stores.
