A medium Japanese konro grill for four to eight people, carved from diatomaceous earth mined on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa. The material insulates extremely well, holding the heat of the charcoal inside the grill so it stays hot and steady through a long meal.

The long, narrow body suits yakitori, with skewers resting across the walls, and gives room to grill several dishes at once.

Use the grill outdoors or in a well-ventilated area only, as burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide. Place it on a heat-resistant board or mat, bring it up to temperature gradually to avoid surface cracking, and never put the fire out with water: diatomaceous earth absorbs water and becomes brittle. Brush out ash and food residue gently rather than washing. Defective items are replaced on delivery; damage from mishandling is not covered.

Features

  • Diatomaceous earth body holds charcoal heat for steady, even grilling.
  • Long, narrow shape lets skewers rest securely across the top.
  • Grill length suits gatherings of four to eight people.
  • Pairs with the matching wooden base board, sold separately.

Specifications

  • Size: Approx. 54 × 23 × 20 cm
  • Weight: Approx. 11 kg
  • Material: Diatomaceous earth
  • Country of Manufacture: Japan

What is a Hibachi BBQ Grill?

Hibachi, more commonly known in Japan as a Shichirin Konro, is a traditional Japanese charcoal grill that has evolved into a versatile and portable cooking device, perfect for outdoor grilling. Originally designed as a heating device, Hibachi grills, are crafted from diatomaceous earth a type of porous ceramic, offering excellent heat insulation and retention.

Hibachis can withstand high-quality charcoal like Binchotan to provide a high heat, smokeless and clean grilling experience, making them ideal for cooking meats, seafood, and vegetables with rich, smoky flavours.

Featured on popular shows like MasterChef Australia, these grills are celebrated for their authentic cooking experience and efficiency. The compact design of Hibachis makes it perfect for camping and outdoor gatherings, while the larger versions are great for home or commercial restaurant use.

What makes Hibachis special

Hibachis are renowned for their outstanding heat efficiency and superior insulation, attributed to their traditional construction. This design minimises heat loss, enabling Hibachi grills to utilise the exceptional Binchotan charcoal, famed for its rich, smoky flavour that is cherished globally.

In Japan, Hibachis are traditionally used to grill yakitori (skewered chicken) and yaki onigiri (grilled rice balls). However, their versatility is celebrated as chefs, particularly on shows like MasterChef Australia, explore new culinary possibilities by grilling a variety of foods such as Dory fish, chilies, and pork chops!

Customers praised this hibachi grill for delivering an authentic Japanese BBQ experience at home. Reviews highlighted it as "easy to use" and "fantastic" with binchotan charcoal. Shoppers loved the size for camping and dining with family. Fast shipping and excellent packaging were noted.
