What is diatomaceous earth?
Diatomaceous earth is a sediment (sedimentary rock) consisting of fossilized shells of dead diatoms deposited at the bottom of seas and lakes during the Cretaceous period.
Because of its porous nature, it is an excellent natural material for filtration, heat retention, moisture absorption, and deodorization.
Even after extended use, its water absorbency can be restored by shaving the surface thinly with commercially available sandpaper (about 400 grit).
